Role Objectives: Fill the position of Master of towing. The Master is responsible for the timely, efficient, and orderly operation and management of the company’s tug. All Masters must hold the appropriate and unexpired Master of Towing Credential, Medical Credential, Radar Observer license, Radio Operator License, and Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card. The Master must be familiar with and dedicated to the safety, environmental health, security, and maintenance standards of the crew, vessel and company.
Key Responsibilities: Responsible for the movement of customer’s assets (barges and equipment) to/from Point Comfort to the Victoria Barge canal in the safest, most cost effective manner possible Reports any and all issues that may impact our company’s vessels, crew, or customer’s assets in a negative manner Piloting the vessel in a safe, disciplined, prudent, and orderly manner Maintaining unity, good order, and discipline among the crew Directing the overall operation of the vessel and crew Completes an accurate computerized daily vessel log Training other crew members on company policies and procedures Ensuring that company policies and procedures are followed Actively participating in drills, training, company meetings and on board safety evolutions, and enhancing the safety and security posture of the vessel Maintaining a professional attitude during operations and whenever dealing with customers partners or company personnel Other appropriate tasks and duties as may be assigned from time to time by company officials.>
Skill Requirements: Effectively communicate orally, in writing and by computer Effectiveness in operating equipment associated with navigation and communications, such as VHF radios, radar units, AIS receivers, and personal computers Appropriate vessel handling, navigation, watch standing and seamanship experience Effective social adaptability, interpersonal skills and resilience Proficient with the use of a computer Knowledge Requirements: Vessel operations and wheelhouse management as would be gained by at least six years of direct, hands-on experience aboard towing vessels in domestic service, Minimum credential of Master of Towing on Inland routes.
Education: High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate) Additional Qualifications: TWIC card and driver’s license required Master of Towing Credential, Medical Credential, Radar Observer license, Radio Operator License.
Physical Requirements: Worker will exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 20 pounds of force constantly,
Requires hearing, talking, grasping quickly, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, crawling and swimming.

REQUIRED EDUCATION: High School Diploma or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE-Three years of relevant industry experience Post Master’s License, experience troubleshooting marine engines and electronics.
PREFERRED EDUCATION: Bachelors degree in Marine Transportation, Maritime Administration, or Marine Systems Engineering.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Five years of relevant industry experience.
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS: United States Coast Guard issued 100 ton Masters Near Coastal License or greater. Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). Valid driver’s license. Ability to obtain United States Powerboat Instructor certification within one year.
PREFERRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS: United States Coast Guard issued Master 1600 ton-Unlimited Oceans with STCW endorsements.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Responsibilities:50%: VESSEL CAPTAIN
Navigate vessels safely and skillfully. Ensure the overall safety of the vessel and all persons on board. Ensure readiness and maintenance of vessels. Report mechanical problems. Ensure deckhands are properly trained. Responsible for discipline of persons that are direct reports. Coordinates with all shore side personnel and port officials. Educate and train embarked persons and students on the marine environment and proper navigation of vessels and the sights of the route.
30%: VESSEL MAINTENANCE
Add items to the departments maintenance software. Assist, when possible, on completing repairs to ensure no or little lost time to courses. Be on call while other TAMUG vessels are underway for emergency repair or problems. Inspect TAMUG vessels and docks and maintain documentation. Vessel maintenance requires that the employee have the ability to drive a University vehicle (including attached trailers) to move and/or launch vessels.
15%: TRAINING
Assist with emergency drills as required by USCG. Maintain 100 % of USCG required crew up to date with First Aid, CPR and drug testing. Coordinate with other captains to revise and update (as needed) Emergency Procedures , Safety Speech , Captain s Checklist , Operation Manuals . US Powerboat Instructor. Assist with vessel operator training program for TAMUG.
5%: Other duties as assigned
OTHER REQUIREMENTS OR FACTORS:
Must pass a USCG/DOT drug test prior to employment and participates in the University s random drug testing plan.
